mexican firms JSª and arquitectura 911sc have recently extended the existing ‘spanish cultural center’ in mexico city to house a wider range of artistic events and exhibits, while linking diverse zones of the city with a strong public presence. the spaces are designed with a longer floor-to-ceiling height and a column-less floor plan to facilitate plays, shows, children’s activities, theaters, shops, conference rooms and seminars. proportions are informed by the neighboring historic buildings to maintain the vernacular while the use of exposed concrete and corten steel panels mimic the local color palette and conserve the added contemporary language.

a variety of structural systems were implemented throughout the project to include and define an eclectic range of functions. a variety of treatments are used with the concrete for differing elements, polished for the floors, rough plasters and smooth finishes with exposed ties for interior and exterior partitions. white metal beams create columns and large box trusses that make up part of the skeleton of the construct, contrasted with the warm rich tones of the wooden doors. glass panes of varying transparencies create visual layers through windows and floor planes.
