today and tomorrow’s architecture should be flexible, sustainable and imaginative creations. but with the fabric of cities already built and its space limited, urban areas must be redesigned for a new life-cycle. this means that architects have to be both economically and socially conscious with their designs. this can be achieved by skilfull planning and dealing sensibly and responsibly with historic building substance – in short: building restoration. the concept of micro-living – concentrating an individual’s living space to a minimum without sacrificing daily comfort – might become a necessity but it should be carefully created. this where JUNG, a premium provider of modern building technology, can help. their smart solutions and switch designs can be integrated in all residences, from cutting-edge apartments to discrete conversions.

to highlight the trend of urban living, JUNG showcases four exemplar residences that, through curated conversions, create a new identity in the metropolis of barcelona, spain.

this 13th century apartment in born – barcelona’s oldest district, was completely renovated by caSA colombo and serboli architecture. four meter-high vaulted ceilings, large windows and thick brickwork are revealed to define an open, light and airy interior. its fresh tones alternate across the white background of the interior, from warm pale pink to bright orange and deep blue. a partition wall was installed for division and to serve as a wardrobe. the JUNG design classic LS 990 in clear alpine white once again contrasts dramatically with the eccentricity of the renovation.

also designed by caSA colombo and serboli architecture, the essence of art nouveau is revealed in the tyche apartment. its original, early 19th century features were restored and integrated into a light, contemporary-styled interior setting. these include its centerpiece catalan vaulted ceiling that adorns an original terracotta finish. with white and bright colors, the rest of the interior is complemented with the elegant, pure formed JUNG design classic LS 990 in alpine white.

although many of its original elements were damaged beyond repair, the FONT 6 apartment by margherita serboli arquitectura – located in the eixample quarter – also brings its catalan art nouveau character to the forefront. its false ceilings were removed in favor to highlight the catalan vault. warm pink and coral tones contrast with white and stunning blue walls, surfaces and its panelled blue box, which sits at the heart of the home. the JUNG design classic LS 990 in aluminum and anthracite emphasizes these contrasts.

the renovation of casa 1302 by harquitectes saw the complete conversion the original building into a new residence. only its original outer walls and staircase remain in the redesign. the concept’s living rooms are defined by three integrated wooden boxes that divide the ground and upper floors by functions. it evokes an industrial yet rustic charm through is unplastered brickwork, exposed rafters and rafter-like walls of the boxes. the naturally minimalist interiors are equipped with the wall-mounting JUNG switch design LS CUBE.
