metropol parasol‘ by german architect j. mayer h. architects is nearing completion with a full realization date projected for march/april 2011. the project is an extensive redevelopment plan of the ‘plaza de la encarnacion’ in seville, spain, and was won by the young architect in 2004. consisting of six timber parasols, the design aims to become a new contemporary urban centre within the dense fabric of the medieval inner city.

the undulating roof structure shades the space underneath while a panorama terrace above the connected plane provides an expansive view of seville. access is granted through the ‘stalks’ of the parasols. the newly generated space includes an elevated platform that can host a number of functions such as a farmers market, concerts, and other activities of leisure.

the timer-construction of the design is finished with a polyurethan coating which protects the wood and allows it to breathe. it ensures that the structure is self-cleaning, requiring a new coat every 20 to 25 years.
