for a site located in the indonesian city of tangerang, k-thengono design studio has envisioned a contemporary residence that mimics the elevated spatial experience of a traditional rice barn. the proposal seeks to engage contemporary architecture with the vernacular building style of indonesia, while paying attention to the context and climatic condition.

the project takes its inspiration from the indonesian rice barn, or lumbung padi, which is typically built on four poles and stands between 1.5 – 2 meters above the ground level. the upper area is used for drying and storing harvested rice while the platform underneath is raised from the ground to provide a meeting place for village residents, facilitating both business activities and social interaction. the design of the bintaro residence takes this vernacular architecture and transforms it using modern, natural materials and an updated program.

using a combination of concrete and steel structure, the private bedrooms are raised above the ground. the architectural order of the habitable roof is created through the basis of triangular geometry, which is topped with a cone shaped skylight to restore the unity between house and nature. in this level all ceilings are slanted, allowing an intimacy and a direct sky view from the openings. nested underneath is the open plan living room, connected by a central spiral staircase. this space blurs the connection between indoor and outdoor thanks to the frame-less retractable sliding doors that lead directly outside to the garden.
