karim rashid's dream house is a futuristic yet economical house in the countryside

the lockdowns resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic made us realize the perks of living in the countryside even if many of us prefer the city life. restricted to our own homes, we were able to determinate what was missing, what we don’t need, but most of all, it shed a light on how important our connection with the outside, and in particular with nature is. many of us saw ourselves craving sunlight, fresh air and a barefoot walk around a beach or a prairie. thankfully, our brains were able to imagine the things we were missing and in some cases, inspire our dream homes, like karim rashid’s disk house.

‘locked down in NYC made me fantasize about building myself a futuristic yet economical house in the country with 360 degree views and this is the result,’ commented karim rashid on a facebook post when he first unveiled the design of this circular, see-through residence. dubbed disk house, this singular column structure looks like a futuristic, secluded fairy tale. the central column not only creates the overall support but also runs all electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and technology, while privately housing the bathroom downstairs.

completely glazed, both the architecture and interior design flows freely in this curved home. outside, a circular pool delineates the house, adding to the freshness of it all. complete with two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, the home expands over 200 square meters and two floors. ‘the expensive version of this house would have polyvision glass to go opaque with a flick of a switch,’ concludes rashid. ‘but maybe no need since it would be surrounded by woods and I could wake up every morning to the sunrise.’
