japanese practice katsutoshi sasaki + associates has completed ‘i.n.g house’, the renovation of a home designed to accommodate two families in toyota, japan. the sensitive restoration of the building is mindful of the memories and feelings attached to the previous property; renewing the structure, but respecting the neighborhood’s vernacular style of architecture.

the house is designed to accommodate two families

internally, the design emphasizes the boundary between the two sets of living spaces, placing an central inner garden between the two ends of the house. this courtyard acts as a buffer zone, providing an adequate sense of distance, where a change in elevation disrupts the line of sight between the two living quarters. a common entrance provides access for both families, while a shared roof terrace occupies the upper level.
