KCA encloses 'the shouter' store in shanghai with cracked concrete walls

KCA – kostas chatzigiannis architecture has enclosed the shouter store in shanghai with massive concrete walls that form a semi-open perimeter due to large openings in the form of cracks and holes. the multi-brand furniture and home decoration store, which has been created as a spin-off of an established furniture retailer in china, is designed to target a younger emancipated clientele. reflecting their luxurious aesthetics and unique context of living, the interior is characterized by a playful contrast between its rough materiality and the sleek aesthetic of the objects on display.KCA encloses the shouter store in shanghai with cracked concrete wallsall images by derryck menere

with a varied collection of quirky, playful, and often limited-edition furniture and objects that explore the boundaries between functionality and art, the shouter aims to satisfy the new desires of the chinese society – those of subtle luxury and artistic self-expression. with an equally quirky and playful approach, KCA designed the store with a perimeter that remains semi-open, with large openings designed as cracks and holes on the massive concrete walls. customers can circulate freely through various entry and exit points, while large glass cabinets block their way at certain points. product displays reminiscent of the shapes and forms of the memphis group are located i nthe center of the room. besides the concrete walls, the material palette of the space comprises terrazzo tiles with glass marbles, and colorful resin boards, while led light structures are used to frame some important pieces. positioned next to established furniture brands, the design of the shouter tries to establish a play between the ruggedness of its materiality and the sleek aesthetic of the objects within.

‘as the home decoration aspirations in china are ever changing, this store does not attempt to define them,’ explains kostas chatzigiannis, founder of KCA. ‘it rather participates, in an anecdotal way, to the accidental game that creates them.’
