constructed as part of the university of tokyo‘s campus, kengo kuma and associates has completed the ‘daiwa ubiquitous computing research building’ in japan. instead of hard materials commonly associated with architecture of this type, the design incorporates natural elements in order to present a smooth and organic frontage. the facility comprises galleries and lecture rooms in addition to indoor and outdoor areas of recreation.

the scheme is characterized by its layered façades, clad with a series of panels comprised of individual wooden slats. the rhythmic elevations are interrupted at various points where glazing allows natural light to enter carefully selected internal volumes. at ground floor level a public passage allows for a connection between the passing street and the japanese garden at the rear – part of the university president’s guest house. the opening also generates a gentle flow of light and wind within the campus, which is otherwise strictly aligned to its grid arrangement.
