nihon sekkei has joined forces with japanese architect kengo kuma to complete a vast complex in tokyo that accommodates an office building, permanent living accommodation, and a vertical garden. named ‘toshima ward office’, the complex has been conceived as a giant tree, clad with a variety of panels – or ‘leaves’ – that serve different functions. the first typology is a photovoltaic cell, which helps provide power for the scheme; the second is a recycled wooden louver that offers shade to internal spaces; and finally a vegetated green panel, which introduces an additional element of nature within the region’s urban fabric. the project’s vertical garden is also a public facility that welcomes visitors throughout the year. the project’s landscaping was completed by landscape plus.
