Ki design studio has renovated the ‘GG apartment‘ situated in the ukrainian capital of kiev. located at the top of a building dating back to 1917, the client desired the refurbishment of the two-storey residence to include ‘wow’ moments within the interior as opposed to creating simply a ‘dull or boring’ space. with this in mind, the scheme by Ki completely redevelops the home and incorporates a metal chute that the clients, or their guests, can slide down from the second floor.

before the renovation, the second floor of the apartment was actually not in use and had been left as an empty, open space. the scheme by Ki utilizes this floor area to include a master bedroom with adjoining dressing room and spacious shower room, a guest bedroom, a private bathroom, and an office. on the first floor, the program comprises of a common area with living, kitchen and dining area and separate rooms for future children.

for the ‘wow’ moment requested by the client, the lower level can be accessed using a fun metal chute, sliding down from the top of the new staircase straight into the living room. due to the load-bearing floor construction of the existing 20th century building, inserting the slide posed a challenge for the designers and builders. as cutting into an area of the floor could’ve proven fatal for the entire structure, time had to be taken in deciding where to position the intervention to ensure overall safety.

the majority of the first floor is planned as an open space, with the kitchen, living and dining area visually connected. this helps to create light, airy spaces more suited to contemporary lifestyles. on the upper floor, rooms benefit from large skylights, which bring in plenty of daylight and make the ceiling height appear greater. regarding the material palette of the interior, warm tones of timber have been implemented against warm white and light gray, with pops of bright color in the textiles and furniture, ensuring the GG apartment will never be ‘dull or boring.’
