kishi environment & architecture design office has converted a residence’s warehouse in the town of kumiyama, kyoto prefecture, japan, into additional living space for the owner’s family. located adjacent to the main house, the warehouse features a gable roof where one side has been lifted higher than the other to allow nature light to enter into the otherwise dark interior. as a modern interpretation of the structure’s uniqueness, which is not designed as a normal living space, the interior walls are completed in exposed OSB board.

located in a neighborhood where warehouses are commonly found in private residences, the project by kishi environment & architecture design office inc demonstrates a solution of effectively utilizing this spatial element in modern times. the japanese architects have connected the warehouse to the main house, creating additional space for the family. the dark interior has been transformed through a new roof shape, which incorporates a higher window. to fit the window, the structure’s gable roof has been lifted higher on one side, capturing more light from the exterior.kishi environment & architecture design office

the warehouse’s original tile roof has been replaced with a metal one to reduce the load on the existing structure. inside, the space is finished in exposed OSB boards on the walls, while most of the floor is made of lauan plywood. part of the floor on the upper level is made of FRP grating to allow natural light to pass through the entire structure. each floor comprises a single room with no partitions, yet the architects imagine they will take up various uses as the family grows.kishi environment & architecture design office kishi environment & architecture design officekishi environment & architecture design office kishi environment & architecture design office converts warehouse into living space in japan kishi environment & architecture design office converts warehouse into living space in japan kishi environment & architecture design office converts warehouse into living space in japan kishi environment & architecture design office converts warehouse into living space in japan kishi environment & architecture design office converts warehouse into living space in japan kishi environment & architecture design office converts warehouse into living space in japankishi environment & architecture design office converts warehouse into living space in japanthe warehouse before the conversion
