for the occasion of the northside music festival in aarhus, denmark, kollision has built the ‘northside arena’ as a meeting place, dance floor, colosseum and social temple. located at the highest point on the site, the intervention offers a space not only to party at night, but also to gather and rest during the day. constructed using 48 timber columns, the design incorporates LED panels to provide a dynamic and interactive experience.

measuring more than 5 meters in height with a diameter of 10 meters, each column is built with four integrated LED panels. the circular design by kollision resembles the image of a contemporary colosseum or rotunda – a shape that, without corners to hide in, naturally lends itself to socializing. and with the addition of colorful illuminations, the structure wraps festival-goers in a fun environment, inviting them to dance the night away.

the LED canvas of the arena is controlled by kollision’s ‘MAP‘ software connected to two lidar sensors, creating an invisible plane right above people’s heads. as festival-goers dance and wave their arms in the air, the invisible plane is activated and the lights change according to the movement picked up by the device. the result is a lively festival experience that draws people in. kollision developed the concept together with representatives from northside and down the drain productions, who also built the arena. kollision also handled all the lighting design, sensor interaction and programming, while the LEDs were provided and installed by martin by HARMAN.
