kooo architects rebuilds 'origin villa' hotel in rural china using bamboo, stone + charred wood

kooo architects has dismantled six buildings in a rural ’empty nest’ village in tonglu, zhejiang province, eastern china, and rebuilt them anew into an accommodation facility that seeks to regenerate its surroundings. titled origin villa, the hotel comprises a series of guest rooms, a restaurant, a bar, and a pool, all of which are designed in harmony with the mountainous landscape and neighboring structures.

kooo architects has partly rebuilt the origin villa with materials used in vernacular architecture, such as clay and stone, in order to harmonize with the surrounding private houses since the different buildings of the hotel are scattered throughout the village. additionally, the studio has expanded the project’s material palette with further local materials, including bamboo, red bricks and charred wood, creating a relaxed, lightweight atmosphere where visitors can enjoy the rich natural environment.

the hotel comprises a series of detached guest rooms, a restaurant, a bar, and a pool, all located in different structures, but relatively close to each other. each building has a view toward the mountain range in front, bringing guests closer to surrounding nature nature. kooo architects has used a palette of local materials throughout the project, uniting the separate constructions into a single accommodation facility while blending into the scenery of the village.
