a stage to display nature

Perched atop a hilly clearing within the forested landscapes of Auvergne, La Grange Rouge is a newly completed holiday home designed by Berlin-based Danish studio Sigurd Larsen. This project in Vollore Montagne transforms a former barn into a unique retreat that celebrates the natural beauty and heritage of the region. With its panoramic views, thoughtful design, and connection to the surrounding environment, La Grange Rouge offers a serene escape amidst the ancient volcanoes of Puy de Dôme.

The architects note that the project is designed to function ‘like a theatre stage, where each day culminates in a spectacular performance of nature’s beauty.’ Perched at the peak of its hilltop location, the house provides uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape, espectially at sunset when the western sky takes on vibrant hues of red and gold. The original steel frame of the barn has been preserved and painted a deep, rich red, reminiscent of cast iron. This color palette, inspired by the warm tones of the sunset, creates a vivid contrast against the lush green surroundings, adding a sense of warmth and drama to the structure.

sigurd larsen designs Intimate Spaces with vast Views

Under the expansive roof of La Grange Rouge, the interior is divided into three bedrooms, each designed by Sigurd Larsen as individual tiny houses. The architects plan these private spaces as personal sanctuaries for guests, with every room oriented to offer stunning views of the valley from the comfort of the bed. Between the bedrooms lies a communal area, designed to resemble a plaza between houses. This shared space frames the spectacular western horizon, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the landscape. The kitchen block forms a fourth enclosure, completing the communal layout, while the dining table extends outward, inviting guests to enjoy meals immersed in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

One of the most distinctive features of La Grange Rouge is its outdoor bathtub, sheltered under the eaves of the roof. This unique element allows guests to bathe under the morning sun or in the crisp winter air. The team notes that the outdoor tub is a ‘ritual to become a special moment of connection with the natural surroundings, regardless of the season.’

Restored Grounds and Natural Harmony

The grounds surrounding La Grange Rouge have been carefully restored to a wild, natural state, with meadows reclaiming their untamed beauty. Scattered throughout the property are islands of garden furniture, serving as small, inviting destinations for guests. These seating areas provide new perspectives and angles to admire the expansive views over the Clermont-Ferrand valley. The vibrant red hues of the house contrast beautifully with the lush greenery, creating a visual harmony that enhances the beauty of both the architecture and the landscape.

La Grange Rouge stands as a hidden red gem in the verdant setting of Auvergne. Every detail of the design has been carefully considered to celebrate the natural beauty and heritage of the local landscape. From its theatrical framing of the sunset to its intimate, private spaces and immersive outdoor features, the house offers a retreat for those looking for relaxation, distant views, and a deep connection with Auvergne.
