designed by la SHED architecture, this residence in montreal is built on the foundations of a typical 90s bungalow that previously occupied the vast wooded plot. named ‘maison terrebonne’, the dwelling seeks to preserve one of the original structure’s principal characteristics – split levels. the overhaul was completed in order to meet the needs of a person living alone, with large open rooms offering an abundance of natural light.

the dwelling’s exterior is covered in eastern cedar siding that will naturally fade over time. simple openings surrounded by black frames serve to punctuate the sheer volume of the house, with the former garage replaced with an open-ended, but enclosed, parking space.

internally, the house features three split levels, each designed for a distinct set of functions that help establish a clear hierarchy between private and communal zones. divided by flights of stairs, each area is configured to remain open in relation to one other.
