french practice LAN architecture has been chosen to restore and restructure the grand palais in paris. the building, a true symbol for the city and its citizens, will undergo a €130 million transformation, strengthening the palace’s historical identity while providing a venue capable of hosting a diverse and eclectic range of events and audiences.

the reconfiguration of the structure involves the implementation of a new circulation route and the opening of large bay windows and passageways, restoring the architecture’s original sense of coherence and transparency. the project also includes the renovation of galleries surrounding the grand nave, the installation of a climate control system, and the creation of a subterranean logistics center.

positioned at the center of the site, the middle building (la grande rue des palais), forms a link between the grand palais and the palais d’antin. respecting the original design, this approach establishes clearly defined entrance points, natural circulation routes and a volume that can efficiently accommodate planned or spontaneous activity. from le square jean perrin, two ramps, designed on the basis of the geometric matrix provided by the steps and the fountain, lead visitors inside. the entrance for specific audiences and independent access to the restaurant is oriented towards the river seine, taking advantage of a large south facing terrace.

exhibition spaces are envisioned as a diverse array of galleries in terms of their volume, light and materiality. consequently, zones are not only flexible, but also events in their own right, hosting a variety of different works from a range of media. these adaptable, yet clearly defined spaces, accommodate the program’s ever-changing exhibits in both the short and long term. an underground level will house logistics facilities and the associated parking and loading bays. these technical works will permit an increase in visitor capacity to the grand palais, enlarging its total visitor capacity from 16,500 currently to more than 21,900.

views are presented to the guest through carefully framed sightlines, revealing themselves progressively as one moves through the building. additionally, the rooftop terrace allows visitors to see the city from a new perspective, presenting unobstructed views across paris.
