experience six landmark buildings from the perspective of an aircraft pilot

a team of creatives at budget direct travel insurance has rendered aerial views of six landmark buildings from different eras sparse around the world. from the eiffel tower in france all the way to the shwedagon pagoda in myanmar, the images give viewers the chance to experience these iconic structures from the perspective of an aircraft pilot or a bird — as daily life continues around them.

the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has affected many industries, seeing tourism fall far and fast. aiming to spark some joy among armchair travel enthusiasts, the budget direct travel insurance team created a case that can only be experienced digitally — both with images and videos. see how sydney’s opera house tiles reflect the sun, or get lost in the intricate patterns on 30 st. mary axe ‘the gherkin’ in london. were you able to identify the eiffel tower after a quick look? and did you know the statue of liberty sits on a 11-pronged star?

on the creation of the project, art director povilas daknys says, ‘to begin, the team captured satellite views of each location on google earth pro. these, together with supporting imagery, were used as references in creating realistic views of the structures from above. the next step was to make the still photos move. to bring them to life we used after effects, a combination of different video footage and masks to create the animated images. as we didn’t have video footage of the structures from above, we needed to find material which would let us set up those elements in motion and still make it look convincing.’
