liget budapest was initially launched in the spring of 2014 as four open competitions aimed at designing separate cultural institutions to be built in the hungarian capital’s ‘city park’, with one of which intended as a combined ‘new national gallery and ludwig museum’. upon reaching the close of its first stage, the jury decided that it did not find, ‘any entry suitable for implementation’, and thus relaunched the contest. the reformed effort includes an open entry first round, while inviting a list of well regarded architects who are guaranteed advancement to the second round. included in the list of invited firms is ateliers jean nouvel, david chipperfield architects, mecanoo, nieto sobejano arquitectos S.L.P., renzo piano building workshop, sejima and nishizawa / SANAA, and snøhetta.

although the competition’s initial efforts were cut short, the jury did select five honorable mention entries, ‘based on their valuable architectural solutions’. the awarded proposals came from new york-based SHoP architects, copenhagen-based ALL / atelier lorentzen langkilde, belgian-based architect gilles retsin, madrid-based ulargui y asociados arquitectos, and the seoul-based team of yuran choi, yongsu choung, and hyunjung kim. see below for a sampling of images from the prized schemes.

beyond the combined ‘new national gallery and ludwig museum’, the initial liget budapest competitions also include a ‘museum of ethnography’, a two-building complex containing the ‘hungarian museum of architecture’ and the ‘fotomuzeum’, as well as the ‘house of hungarian music’.
