linee minime extends a penthouse in rome using a trestle framework

linee minime – an emerging architecture studio founded by francesco fumagalli – has completed a small yet impactful architectural intervention in the heart of the italian capital. situated in the center of rome, the project involves the careful renovation and extension of an existing penthouse apartment.

considering the unique history of rome, fumagalli approached the brief with one vital question: ‘how can design celebrate the relationship between our past and our needs?’ with the realized project, called ‘trestle veranda’, his response focuses on the implementation of an intricate structure and the application of high quality materials and finishes, resulting in a contemporary yet timeless aesthetic.

as the name of the project suggests, the extension takes on a trestle framework and is specifically designed to better distribute the load of the canopy. the trestle is formed by one external and one internal oak shaped column, which work together with four welded steel joints in a purely compressed configuration without the use of traditional connections such as screws, nails or glue.

the trestle framework is clearly expressed both inside and out, and helps give the micro intervention its own unique character. the roof is composed of triangular oak slats interspersed with expanded cork, with a curved wedge volume and a parametric geometry that connects the lead cladding to the glass walls.

located in a shaded corner of the terrace, the extension is home to the dining room of the house. the new interior design and distribution of the historical penthouse is based on the connection of three units built in different times, through internal axes and pure spaces that draw the gaze outwards to the glass walls.

a palette of natural materials, which are customized in every detail, has been thoughtfully selected by the architect. oiled oak timber and black steel express strength and solidity in the structure and floors, while expanded cork and handmade lead cladding bring a modern twist. the interior is also finished with highly insulating glass walls and natural carrara corchia marble slabs made by a local artisan.
