‘casa westway’ is a renovation project of a single family residence built in the late 50’s in downtown of mcallen, texas. the original building was constructed as a single rectangular footprint with a typical massing topped by two-pitched roofs, which represents a very distinctive house prototype of its time in this region. in order to update the structure’s architectural character, lopez resendez studio and katagiri architecture + design decided to join forces.

the main idea was to break the shape of the gables into several pieces by unfolding the planes. ‘this gave us the chance to create cross relationship which transforms roof into façade and façade into roof, and provided interior spaces richer value of natural light and articulation,’ said the studios. consequently, each room was linked to a social program to provide a more fluent relationship between spaces and continued to the exterior patio in order to extend the living room to outdoor areas in parallel with the ceiling system. this materiality seeks to create an expression that will change over time as it develops an intimate dialogue with the surrounding context.
