lucas y hernández-gil adds artificial interior landscape to madrid's casa A12

locally-based architecture practice lucas y hernández-gil has recently completed a duplex house in madrid titled casa A12. the project, which consisted of a home renovation, was faced with a complex difficulty: letting natural light in into the deep and originally very dark space. different mechanisms were used to infill the space with light, including the use of metallic materials in the ceilings and vertical surfaces, as well as adding skylights and vertical perforations on the walls.

one of the main design features of casa A12 by lucas y hernández-gil is the addition of a landscaped interior courtyard naturally lit through a lattice. it constitutes an oasis, or a tropical garden of surreal character that structures the lower floor by having the program organized around it. ‘the roman and mediterranean house, introverted and organized around the impluvium, the atrium, the courtyard, merges here with the description that gaston bachelard gives of the house in his “poetics of space” from a phenomenological point of view, where the imagination augments the values of reality,’ comments the studio.

boasting a clean design with blocks of color that reference rothko’s paitings, casa A12 is visually divided by its chromatic duality. the different atmospheres have been linked by the perspective contrasts found around the rooms, the use of color and materials, and the addition of natural light, in order to configure an artificial interior landscape.
