the warm humid climate of tavernier, florida, allows for a home to fully integrate with the outdoor environment with large open outdoor spaces. the tavernier drive residence by miami-based studio luis pons design lab is an extension to an existing home projecting out towards the front street, creating an open space that affords views and circulation towards the ocean while offering enough privacy towards the street. services are located on the street side with bedrooms facing the rear park and sea. underneath the extension, an open space with columns serves as an exterior living room, entirely open on three sides yet still protected by the habitable canopy – a tropical private plaza. the materials feature a play between wood planks and exposed concrete that allow for cantilevered porches along the back side in contrast to the front which is characterized by solid surfaces and smaller apertures.
