melbourne-based architecture studio lyons designed the ‘lyon housemuseum‘ as a home and a cultural project to support and promote contemporary art, architecture and music. the new building houses the lyon family’s collection of australian contemporary art, operates public visits and runs educational programs. the design of the building was conceived of as a hybrid of a private residence and a public museum, hence the name housemuseum. this unique programming forces each space in the structure to serve multiple functions, one for living and one for visitors. the housemuseum opened in september 2009 and ‘challenges our conventional notions of ‘public’ and ‘private’ and explores new relationships between art and architecture’. the lyon housemuseum was just shortlisted as a finalist for the prestigious premier’s design awards in victoria.
