in sapporo, japan, local practice m+o has finalized ‘alice house’, a property located on a 175 square meter plot in a old residential area of the city. surrounded by unkempt and deserted houses, the primary challenge for the architects was to bring as much daylight as possible into the home while obtaining pleasant external views.

the solution was to place internal volumes side-by-side, connecting them on the east-west axis and thereby creating small and adjacent outside areas. these intimate external areas are planted with flowers, vegetables, trees and shrubs. internally, the careful positioning of windows ensures that the property is brightly lit throughout, with a spiral staircase connecting the two storey home.
