in a dense suburban neighborhood in the city of sizuoka, japanese practice mA-style architects has completed the ‘green edge house’. to maintain the privacy of the residents, the architects played with the idea of a courtyard to obtain natural light and air, but could not quite protect the spaces from exterior views. the courtyard was instead made linear and wraps the perimeter of the program- a ring made of stones and various plant life. an external wall measuring 2.4 meters is lifted almost one meter from the ground giving the inhabitants privacy from the street while allowing light to illuminate the space from the ground. a platform of birch wood flooring is enclosed within glass partitions so each room is surrounded by an illuminated green belt that exhibits exterior conditions and changes with the seasons.
