architecture and woodworking studio madeiguincho realizes its ‘diagonal studio’ as part of a larger series of tiny timber structures across portugal. this compact structure houses the reception office of wood supplier ‘diagonal proporcional,’ with whom the design team worked closely. sculpted as an art object, the minimal project is designed as a single volume with a simple geometry, all originating from a 90-degree angle. beginning with this angle, the team conducted many iterative studies before arriving at the final shape. the simplicity of the geometry is enlivened by an exterior finish of rhythmic vertical battens which add a textural richness while maintaining the pure timber palette.

with the design of its diagonal studio, the team at madeiguincho seeks to celebrate and express its timber materiality. the texture is left exposed and unfinished, while the selected material is highly resistant due to the hot climate of portugal and the long hours of sun exposure the project will withstand. the studio is built of poplar plywood, a material known for its durability and bending strength. the team comments: ‘since its a reception and studio we decided to let it be very minimalistic  in order to let the decoration take place and fill the space as needed and as versatile possible according to the different situations.’
