stéphane malka of malka architecture has constructed a series of vertical stealth shelters existing in legal ambiguity across the façade of a railway viaduct in marseille, france. with levels of homelessness increasing throughout the country, ‘a-kamp47’ provides protection for the community’s marginalized, and serves as a catalyst for public debate and discussion.

comprised of twenty-three separate units, the project utilizes the mobile and lightweight characteristics of a pop-up tent, while at the same time unifying the individual structures in order to protect against cold weather and vandalism. a socially and politically charged scheme, the design questions whether this vertical plot is public or private property, inhabiting a previously unoccupied space.

‘a-kamp47’ is taken from petit pari(s) a book by malka architecture released in january 2014.

  • Kathryn, Ron you should look at the section and on some picts showing a bit of the inside; there’s a textile that allows to lay inside of it via a polyester elastic textile; been there and it was a cool and comfy shelter !

    Bertrand
  • Not much attention given to the ‘shelter’ aspect but a lot of attention paid to the visual aspect of the exercise.
    Interesting to look at.
    Not a shelter at all.
