marco de gregorio – jan henriksen architects refurbishes an apartment in a historical building in barcelona using ral 9010 pure white as the main concept. situated in the 19th-century part of the city, just outside of the perimeter of the old city center, the modern construction comprises an attic and a private terrace.

‘functionally we want to create a diaphanous space so you can overlook the entire flat in almost one glimpse – and conceptually we have been driven by one idea: ral #010 pure white’, explain the architects. originally, the flat was divided into seven smaller rooms that are transformed by taking down all existing internal walls and enlarging a few windows to obtain maximum daylight in the flat. the resulting three open areas feature the kitchen, living and dining room, a master bedroom and a studio that can be divided up into a guest room with a pivotal wall door.

the ral 9010 palette is complemented by smooth shiny textures, while the apartment’s lighting is conceived as straight, dynamic lines cutting the ‘white box volume’, inbuilt in the ceilings and walls or under the furniture to create a softer atmosphere. wide, floor-to-ceiling doors and mirrors are strategically placed to enhance the fluidity of the space along with built in cabinets that offer space for displaying paintings, art objects and magazines. iron shelf systems under the studio’s ceiling contain the books collection and enhance the horizontal strength of the interior.
