architects markus hinteregger and elias lahner have shared captivating visualizations of their proposal to extend a hotel in the mountain village of luttach in northern italy. the scheme was designed as part of a competition organized by the owners of the hotel, in which they sought to extend and unify the entire hospitality complex. hinteregger and lahner’s proposal reshapes the existing buildings and adds an organic-shaped extension in between that blends into the contours of the land.

the concept by markus hinteregger and elias lahner envisions the restructuring of the buildings based on the organic forms of the surroundings. the whole project, therefore, blends into the landscape and creates a more natural open space for visiting guests.

the existing buildings, which are differentiated in dimension and height, are clad in expanded metal to unify all the façades and create a new ‘face’ for the hotel. openable shutters on the elevations create rhythm and underline the adaptation of the buildings to the individual needs of the visitors.

in between the more traditionally-shaped volumes are organic spaces that look like they’ve been carved from the land. the round forms harmonize with the hilly landscape; here the extension opens up and offers guests a change of perspective. this extension, embedded in the landscape, can be used for a variety of functions and is conceived as the focal point for guests who stay in the hotel.
