megowan architectural has completed the three angle house, a private residence for a couple located on a ridge across from a reserve in the seaside suburb of mount martha, australia. developed as a continuation in thought, form, detail, region, and team of the two angle house (see coverage here), this project also takes into account its surrounding environment, responding to solar orientation and the three primary views found onsite. the main living spaces and master suite have been lifted to the first floor of the house to maximize views out to mornington and the bay (north), mount martha reserve and point nepean (west) and the distant melbourne CBD (southwest).images by elise scott and anthony richardson

megowan architectural has designed the three angle house in mount martha, australia, for a couple looking for a change from city life. as such, the project has been developed to make the most out of the site’s natural surroundings, which resulted in lifting most living spaces to the first floor to benefit from the striking views of the area. the ground floor of the house features large outdoor living spaces, an infinity edge pool and additional bedrooms designed for extended-stay visitors from overseas.

as one approaches the entry of the house, which appears burrowed into the earth, they encounter the building’s principal northern view across the bay. two board formed concrete walls focus the eye through a large glazed blackbutt sliding door, which frames a breathtaking view across jullul bay. a blackbutt wood and steel stair cantilevers off one of the board formed walls and lands between the master suite and living areas on the first floor. the living, dining and kitchen areas are all aligned to the main view to the north.

blackbutt and concrete details are intentionally juxtaposed throughout the space. blackbutt timber soffits, flooring, decking and sliding doors add warmth to the key spaces. concrete walls, cast-in-place concrete kitchen benchtops and hearths, raw fibre cement panels and polished plaster provide tactility and imperfection to the spaces. the master suite is designed as an elegant wing of the home featuring large expanses of porcelain, extensive custom joinery, polished plaster and wool carpet, all while remaining connected to exterior views.
