built right next to the numerous skyscrapers of ho chi minh city‘s an phu ward, the sky house by vietnamese practice, MIA design studio, seeks to bring in as much nature as possible within its spaces in order to create a calm, tranquil interior for its residents amidst the deeply congested exterior environment. the open, airy house promotes a deep connection, both in the horizontal and in the vertical direction, between its different inhabitants, as well as between its inhabitants and nature via a series of gaps and links throughout its interior spaces.images by oki hiroyuki, trieu chien, hoang le
in order to create a tranquil, harmonious environment amidst the high-density surroundings, MIA design studio determined a clear visual for the architectural plan of sky house, where vertical and horizontal connections result in an open and airy living space. nature holds a prominent presence throughout the house, either in the form of extruded planter-like balconies on its façade, where various types of plants are growing, or as various interior elements in which planted trees and other kinds of greenery link the various spaces together.
as an alternative to the common approach of opening the four sides of the house, the vietnamese studio has created a vertical connection between the house and the sky, which allows the interior to receive natural sun light from above. in addition to the extruded balconies, its façade is also characterized by openings in various sizes, which can also be found within the interior. inside, MIA design studio has used these openings to promote connections between the house’s inhabitants, such as allowing parents to keep an eye on their children from every corner.
