in phuket, thailand, michaelis boyd envisions a development of luxury senior residences entitled ‘otium living.’ integrated into the sloping jungle landscape, the untouched natural habitat of the proposed site suits a calming retreat with sweeping views overlooking kamala beach. the designs for this private and secure village aim to offer independent senior residents a dynamic and exclusive community lifestyle with on-site services and luxury amenities.

michaelis boyd designs the ‘otium living’ residences with respect for the landscape of thailand, cleverly playing with the sloping contours. the team proposes to nestle the buildings into the hillside, maximizing views over the andaman sea. intended as a serene jungle retreat, a series of footpaths, wheelchair and ambulant ramps have been designed for ease of living and to facilitate access and keep car use to a minimum. to ensure the proposal sits sensitively within its context, the contemporary design takes inspiration from traditional vernacular and local materials.

at the heart of the ‘otium living’ dwellings, a resident and member village will include a series of communal amenities. these include leisure facilities, a fitness and wellness center, a lounge pool with bar and restaurant, cafes and delis and a library style co-working space. this is all nestled among planted gardens, organic allotments, external yoga platforms, and an outdoor cinema to inspire communal luxury living. an architectural highlight is the subtle curvature of the village buildings, which, combined with a considered and coherent palette of perforated brick and glass, serves both to unify the design and reflect the natural forms of the landscape.
