nestspace design has completed the refurbishment of a 23 sqm micro-apartment in taipei, as a response to the high prices of urban living in taiwan. in an attempt to achieve maximum spatial efficiency, the designers have redistributed the flat, removing one of the original walls to create a practical, flexible scheme. dubbed ‘miao miao’, the project allocates different areas for hobbies, household chores, and daily situations throughout the interior, in order to provide a variety of textures and characters to the limited space.

apart from maximum space efficiency, the revamp seeks to form a well-lit and cross-ventilated apartment for the occupants. following a simple approach, nestspace design applied a limited materiality and color palette, in order to produce a minimal yet refreshing style for the interior. although the development of the layout started from a horizontal perspective, it ended up more vertical roughly dividing the space into four parts.

a relaxing zone emerges at the entryway, while the short corridor helps shift the mood. then, the multi-functional common area appears, encouraging users to participate in fun social activities. the bedroom is located on the mezzanine level, and a study desk is recessed beneath it, protected under a steel supporting structure. on the opposite side of the mezzanine, there is a well-equipped kitchen. despite the narrow provided area, the tiny flat incorporates a variety of functions, responding efficiently to the needs of the residents.

since the occupants are avid music lovers with many vinyl & CD collections, it was vital to incorporate sufficient storage in the apartent. aside from large cabinets along the walls, the staircase also integrates selves where the collections can be stored and displayed. nestspace design covered the kitchen island cabinet with guitar-inspired rusty texture to reflect the owner’s rocker spirit and love for music. overall, the apartment provides a decompression hideaway that is both open and private through a simple design.
