miquel subiras’ ‘la cometa cultural center’ will provide services for the locals of montagut i oix, spain, offering a complimentary area, for its spacious characteristics and proportions, to the public spaces that exists in the municipality. it consists of a main diaphanous hall, well illuminated, of approximately 140 m2. to complement this room there is an exterior barbecue area with a 50 m2 yard. the interior is completed with a multiple use room of 30 m2 and an additional 30 m2 for the services and washing area. outside, throughout a grandstand and giving access to the building, there is a porch of 120 m2 that relates the built part with the natural one.

one of the characteristics of spanish based workshop miquel subiras‘ project is its implementation. located in front of the green area of an urbanization in a rural setting, ‘la cometa’ wants to be more an object, a sculpture rather than a building. the civic center wants to be more related to the natural environment around it than to the built one of the urban area. it is for this reason that it remains buried by its north facade, which faces the urbanization and it is opened to its south facade, looking at the landscape. this implantation also responds to a good thermal regulation of the building and a good natural lighting.

the organic form of the building mimics the gestures of nature that surrounds it

the organic form of the building mimics the gestures of nature that surrounds it. the outline of the building is integrated with the landscape following its profile — ‘the profile of our landscape’. all this gestuality is represented with iron corten — a ductile and resistant material that allows to get a fresh, light and suggestive architecture. the glass gives transparency and allows the exterior to approach the interior. the concrete as a hard and resistant element gives the transition between the landscape and the building.

miquel subiras’ ‘la cometa cultural center’ is basically built with these three recyclable components. gestures, transparencies, filters — elements that we find represented in the nature that surrounds us and which have enjoyed being the inspiration for this architectural piece in montagut i oix.
