in the central japanese city of takasaki, tokyo-based practice miyahara architect office has constructed ‘house IM’, a residence that also contains gallery space for an artistically inclined client. positioned on a 218 square meter plot of land, the building is a 4 meter high box that sits on reinforced concrete foundations.

external walls are finished in a mottled cloud motif, while elevated windows are positioned around the building in order to offer pleasant external views. access inside the dwelling is provided via a metal ramp that leads visitors into the resident’s daily life. fluid and flexible interior spaces are arranged around a central courtyard which connects the design. a large living room adjoins a smaller gallery, with sleeping accommodation is positioned in another corner of the single storey property.
