durability and adaptability characterize saunabivak

Architecture meets furniture and communal well-being with BIVAK studio’s SAUNABIVAK. The monolithic sauna, designed to be mobile and adaptable to various terrains, hovers on four adjustable legs that allow the structure to be easily transported to and positioned on a range of rural retreats and urban environments. The structure is enveloped in a single layer of CLT and double-layer glass which blurs the boundary between the built and natural environment, offering expansive views and a tranquil bathing experience.

bivak studio encapsulates the communal spirit of sauna bathing

Embodying the essence of sauna bathing, SAUNABIVAK encapsulates its communal spirit rooted in nature, and its simplicity with relies on only firewood, a serene environment, and good company. BIVAK studio sought to celebrate the culture by creating a tranquil space that can easily become rooted in its context. The structure stands on four slender legs which offer the structure mobility and flexibility, allowing it to be easily be lifted off a trailer without a crane. With environmental responsibility in mind, the architects recycled construction industry waste for the legs, repurposing discarded spacers used previously for slab formwork and concreting.

The sauna is entirely prefabricated with meticulous precision, with a structural system is made from layer-glued pine CLT panels which are left exposed, eliminating the need for additional coverings. The exterior is treated with linseed oil by firing, ensuring it is resistant to the weather and insects. Efficient heating and natural ventilation are also achieved within.

With portability a key concern, BIVAK studio has ensured that the size and weight of the sauna comply with the towing rules of the European road section. As a result, the need for on-site work and obtaining a building permit are eliminated. Due to road size restrictions, no more than eight people can enjoy the sauna at the same time, creating an exclusive experience for users. Further, installation can be carried out by two people in just one hour without the need for extensive or specialized construction.
