Yucca Valley Cabin stands on the xeric Mojave Desert

LA-based fabrication laboratory & design studio Knowhow Shop completes the ‘Yucca Valley Cabin’ project located in the Mojave Desert of California, USA. Beginning as an inquiry for custom windows and frames for a cabin structure, the proposal later forms into the full construction of a rehab desert retreat. Drawing from the original mid-century jackrabbit homestead, the design shapes up a minimal residence that unveils a classical modern interior defined by wooden textures and vivid colors emanating a cozy ambiance. Vaulted formations adorn most of the interior spaces with arched openings sustaining visual connection between the zones. The curved white volumes are accentuated by the use of vibrant orange furnishings and fixtures in the common dining zone, and bespoke fitted cupboards, bookcases, and door frames throughout the more intimate areas.

a classic vaulted form anchors the interior

The minimal desert retreat combines utilitarian materials and Knowhow Shop‘s design vision to develop a classic vaulted form anchoring the interior. The arrangement divides the cabin in half with the central zone serving as a framework for the essential programmatic infrastructure required for a domicile of its scale, such as the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and storage areas. The simple stucco exterior reinterprets the Southwest Adobesque details of the original cabin through a minimalist filter, framing windows that provide views of Mojave Desert’s xeric landscape.
