boston based studio, moskow linn architects has completed ‘swamp huts’, a project originally conceived over 20 years ago. located in newton, massachusetts, the family compound sits on a ten acre site, where only one eighth of an acre was buildable.
four huts – designed to sit lightly upon the land – surround a central deck creating a protective enclosure that acts as communal space for the family. looking to facilitate outdoor living and an appreciation for the swamp habitat, the site provides an immersive environment ideal for weekend getaways.

varied in their transparencies and exposure, the simple, pitched roof structures each have distinct characteristics appropriate for their specific use. a cleansing hut, positioned to the north is the most enclosed structure with an aluminum roof. outfitted with a composting toilet and solar shower, the unit provides users with basic conveniences as well as a place to prepare meals in wet weather.

two sleeping huts, topped with translucent fiberglass roofs oppose each other, facing east and west. diffused images of the circumscribing landscape filter through the tent-like structures, surrounding the user and overtaking the room. at night, the buildings are illuminated from within, similar to lanterns.

completing the circle is the table hut, positioned to the south. furnished with a built- in table and benches, the roofless unit extends over a swamp, providing a place to observe the local wildlife and surrounding nature.

utilizing standard framing stock with nominal sizes to minimize waste, the compound, which measure 580 square feet in total, is designed to be prefabricated and economical in cost.
