Moss Hut by Ulf Mejergren Architects (UMA) stands in Grödinge

Ulf Mejergren Architects (UMA) in collaboration with the local farmer Robert Pettersson construct Moss Hut, a temporary pavilion standing in the forested region of Grödinge, Sweden. The project is part of the ‘Farm Art’ series developed by the unusual art duo and consists of various projects on the farmer’s land with techniques and know-how provided by the agriculturist blended with creativity and artistic intentions on the designers’ behalf. Led by Pettersson’s hunting interest, the hut made of moss acts as a feeding point for wild boars.

plywood, moss, and chicken wire put up the moss hut

Over the years, Pettersson has strategically placed food in the forest to attract wild boars. However, the boars’ forceful search for insects and roots has disrupted the forest floor, leaving scattered droves of unearthed moss. The extraordinary nature of moss lies in its unique ability to thrive on various surfaces, thanks to its suction-like root system called rhizoids. These rhizoids draw nutrients and water directly from the air, eliminating the need for traditional soil.

The design team at UMA forms a 4.5 m circle out of plywood carving a hole in the middle. On the back side, a large plywood box is attached to a tree with ropes holding the disc facade of the structure up seemingly touching the ground with a minimal footprint. The box is reached by a small ladder underneath it. All exterior and interior surfaces of the pavilion are covered with moss and chicken wire held in place with staples properly attached to the plywood.
