MUJI has opened a version of its ‘plain house’, previously featured on designboom here, in japan’s yamaguchi prefecture. the single storey wooden structure, which is also known as ‘yō no ie’, follows MUJI’s other forays into holistic living environments. in addition to being earthquake-resistant and fully insulated, the building features large openings that connect to an expansive terrace and potential garden beyond. the home has been configured to accommodate a wide range of generations and a variety of different lifestyles.

MUJI’s ‘plain house’ boasts an open layout without fixed divisions or separations. this maximizes the amount of potential functions that can take place within the home. the open plan living space is able to spill out onto the adjacent terrace, while the bedroom can be separated with a sliding partition. MUJI says that the home’s flexible configuration is capable of adapting to changes in working and living habits, accommodating a diverse range of lifestyles.

with a total floor area of 101.85 square meters (1,096 square feet), the project has been conceived as a high-performance box that is built to last. while the house is fully insulated for the winter months, during summer residents can open the sliding doors to the terrace — dissolving the boundary between internal and external space. this offers the option of dining outdoors. currently only available in japan, ‘plain house’ is priced at 19.07 million yen before tax, approximately $182,000 USD. the home is available to view by reservation only, with more information here
