‘flower shop green life’ by japanese studio nadamoto yukiko architects is a twenty square meter floral boutique in kushiro city, hokkaido. influenced by traditional japanese arts such as calligraphy and flower arrangement, the design places importance on ‘the beauty of space’ by turning the surfaces of the room into a blank canvas. the resulting effect is a physical embodiment of the void between calligraphy characters which allows the writing to express its beauty.

accommodating a workspace for the storekeeper, the cubic volume is an open space where customers can freely view the flowers in stock. thin, curvy platforms serve as display shelves, seemingly protruding out of the walls and supported by spindly white legs. the expansive blankness of the space itself creates an effective backdrop in which the colours of the flowers become the focus of the room.
