tribos studio revives iconic Nakagin Capsules as seaside lodges

tribos studio preserves and reimagines capsules from the iconic Nakagin Capsule Tower, originally completed in 1972 and demolished in 2022. These capsules, saved from demolition, were relocated from Tokyo to a tranquil seaside setting in Kanagawa, Japan, where they were transformed into accommodations that honor the principles of Metabolism architecture.

Encased in wave-like aluminum panels, the capsules merge architectural design with their natural surroundings. The Nakagin Capsule Renovation project seeks to continue the legacy of Metabolism, which viewed buildings as dynamic, modular units that could evolve continuously, much like cells in a living organism.

Nakagin Capsules’ new design reflects light and sea patterns

The capsules’ new design by tribos architectural studio emphasizes their connection to the sea. Reflective aluminum panels on the ceiling evoke the movement of waves, integrating elements of the surrounding environment into the space. During the day, the panels capture the shimmer of the blue sea, while at sunset, they reflect golden hues, creating a luminous atmosphere. At night, the illuminated ceiling mirrors the stars, blending the interior with the night sky. These shifts emphasize the Metabolist idea of architecture as a celebration of perpetual change and renewal.
