conceived as a latticed urban forest, host country italy has presented their pavilion for expo milan 2015. designed by nemesi studio, the scheme is oriented to face the piazza d’acqua (the water square), the representative site of the italian government. entitled ‘the nursery of italy’, the project is the winning entry of an international competition based around the concepts of transparency, energy, water, nature and technology.

the tree-like design is articulated around a large central square that welcomes guests to the site and forms the starting point of the exhibition. internally, the scheme offers a clearly defined and engaging exhibition route that leads to a terrace offering expansive views across the expo site. at roof level, a crowning glass canopy is constructed from solar panels generating renewable and sustainable energy. additionally, the cement used is photocatalytic, meaning that on contact with sunlight it catches air pollutants and converts them into inert salts.

the structure will remain standing after the event, serving the city as a center of technological innovation.
