movement organizes Casa Macedonia’s fragmented interior plan

Casa Macedonia is a refurbishment project by Bardo in Madrid that reorganizes an existing apartment around a fragmented floor plan. Responding to the client’s request for independent rooms that provide privacy while maintaining spatial continuity, the design uses a private courtyard to establish a continuous circulation route connecting each space. Rather than relying on open-plan layouts, the apartment unfolds as a sequence of interconnected rooms in which movement becomes a defining element of the spatial experience.

The project develops through a layered composition of color, material, and form. Existing structural elements that could not be removed, including a column and beam, are enclosed within translucent neon-colored acrylic. Instead of concealing these components, the intervention transforms them into an architectural element that mediates between the living area and the bedroom. The acrylic surface filters light, generates reflections, and creates varying degrees of transparency, allowing transitions between rooms to become part of the overall spatial composition.

Throughout the apartment, individual rooms are distinguished by specific material and chromatic identities while remaining connected through a consistent design language. In the dining area, a curved wall clad in aubergine lacquered MDF establishes a defined backdrop and introduces a contrasting geometric element within the otherwise linear plan. The use of color and material reinforces the sequence of spaces while giving each room its own spatial character.

The kitchen reinterprets conventional domestic arrangements through a combination of white tiled surfaces, deep blue cabinetry, and a stone countertop with an undulating profile. The contrast between the regular geometry of the wall tiles and the sculptural form of the worktop introduces variation within an otherwise functional workspace. The bathrooms are treated as distinct environments within the overall composition. One combines curved forms, micro-tiling, and color to create an immersive interior, while the other adopts continuous surfaces, earthy tones, and a restrained material palette that emphasizes spatial calm through simplicity.

The design team at Bardo extends the sequence of interior spaces into the exterior through the courtyard. Earth-toned finishes and planting introduce a softer material atmosphere, establishing continuity with the apartment while providing a transition between the more expressive interior rooms and the outdoor environment.

Rather than organizing the home as a series of isolated functions, the refurbishment establishes a continuous spatial narrative in which circulation, material transitions, and changing atmospheres define the experience of the apartment. Color, light, and architectural interventions work together to articulate each room while maintaining coherence across Casa Macedonia project as a whole.
