two winners chosen in new bauhaus museum competition
(above) joint 1st place entry: young & ayata

the bauhaus foundation has selected not one, but two winners of the design competition for a new museum building in the german city of dessau. the jury could not agree on one particular entry, so instead selected barcelona-based gonzalez hinz zabala + sastre vielba and new york-based young & ayata to share the award. discussions will now take place with both practices before an outright winner is appointed.

the new institution will enable the foundation to comprehensively present its valuable 40,000-object collection for the first time. the opening of the museum is scheduled for the bauhaus centenary in 2019. see more on both projects below.

young & ayata’s design is composed of a series of individual masses aggregated serially through a grid. referred to as ‘vessels’, the sculptural forms allude to the crafted object of a vase or volumetric container.

the architects: ‘it would be a reduction of the complexity of the bauhaus to divide it cleanly into a technical side and an expressive side, yet technical and expressive factors were often in conflict and in conversation throughout its history. the tension between these two motivations — and specifically the shape that tension took at the bauhaus — continues to influence art, architecture, and design today. our design of a museum for the bauhaus dessau is strongly informed by such productive tension–in this case, the tension between a desire for a modular repeatable system of organization, provided by a grid, and the exploration of sensation found in color and material experimentation.’

the jury: ‘the building conceives of itself as an open collective. it is a stand-alone structural shell that will become a new point of reference in its heterogeneous urban environs. the design concept boasts a suggestive power and has a high recognition value. references to various bauhaus approaches have been formulated in a conclusive manner. what is thus created is a powerful, daring and fascinating, seminal architectonic testimonial to the 21st century that, in global competition will make a unique footprint.’

the entry from gonzalez hinz zabala + sastre vielba forms a bridge structure in which the collection is presented over a permeable public space used for temporary exhibitions, events and workshops. the protected glass covered volume allows the continuity of the bauhaus, not only as part of the museum activities, but also as part of the city of dessau.

the architects: ‘on the one hand, the volume includes an urban space, on the other hand, its transparency allows an interaction between street and museum, between city and park. our project offers playful contrasts as heaviness and lightness, opacity and transparency, system and flexibility, order and spontaneity. the museum is an instrument and a catalyst for expressing activity and productivity, creativity and social interaction that altogether corresponds with the idea of the bauhaus.’

the jury: ‘the new bauhaus museum conceives of itself as an iconographic heritage, and with its glass foyer story communicates between urban city life and the municipal park and attracts visitors to the museum. the glass envelope of the entire building provides a maximum of curatorial freedom for staging. the shell takes up the original bauhaus intention – to be an open school. in terms of both functionality and display capabilities in all spaces, this design is a very good contribution – the museum edifice is an instrument to express activity and productivity – creativity and social interaction.’
