micro home nestled among busy surroundings in sydney is lightweight and simple in form

sydney-based studio architect george designed this tiny house in newtown, australia as an exploration of how to live in small spaces and dense environments while being connected to the outdoors. the house occupies 68 square meters and is located in what the architect described as ‘one of the smallest sites you will come across as an architect’. the site is adjacent to a busy train line and in the center of a very active urban context.

architect george created a space that is uniform in color and minimal in form in order not to overwhelm the already busy surroundings. the architects tried to maximize the site’s closeness to urban facilities by framing views and creating access wherever possible. the house consists of two bedrooms and two bathrooms with improved connections to the outdoors.

the architects also added a new second-floor volume as part of their intervention. this addition follows the set-back pattern of the first floor. all rooms have access to windows and a green roof that can be seen from the bed. also, a minor modification of the existing first-floor plan and removal of redundant walls resulted in a huge improvement to the site.

the architects kept the varied textures that existed in the original house. they decided to keep everything white to highlight the different textural qualities and history of the house. moreover, the surrounding is full of different materials and colors all with strong overlays of graffiti and urban life. the use of concrete block internally adds a sculptural element to the interiors while more luxurious finishes like ceramic mosaic tiles have been used with restraint.
