japanese architect yoshimasa tsutsumi, founder of beijing-based tsutsumi & associates (TSUAA), worked with nie yong to complete the ‘THT daxing factory conversion’ in china consisting of office, exhibition and manufacturing spread over four floors of a former industrial building. the design employs furniture making on the first two and half of the third level, where the remainder becomes a show room. from there a spiral stair leads up to a working landscape with extended elevated platforms, stepped stages and connecting ramps, and ends at the relaxation loft.

the ‘THT daxing office’ consists of conference and meeting rooms, a relaxation area, and vice president’s suite composed as objects in a three-dimensional open floor plan office landscape. public programs are centered around the circulation core for easily access. at the heart of this area is a circular stair, which provides access to the exhibitions below. ascending a few more steps, one reaches the lounge, lofted above a small meeting room. opposite, there is a conference auditorium with stadium style seating. beyond one reaches the working area with its composition of skip-floors intended to induce communication and interaction among employees.

a simple palette and basic materials  – white epoxy paint, mortar finish, and steel checkered plates – finish the interior. strong accents created in COR_TEN steel were added to the elevator hall and stairs, while the wide wall across the entrance hall has vertical plantings to soften the space.

inside the landscape with various levels, white boxes are put as if to make village. there are some bypasses, hidden area and open area, alcove where we can look down the atrium, also we can overview whole area from the loft space. as if we walk inside the ancient village, we can enjoy sequential view here.‘ – yoshimasa tsutsumi
