NIKE soweto training center

image: designboom.com in support of the 2010 FIFA world cup in johannesburg, south africa, nike has built a football training center in the city’s soweto neighbourhood. the center is designed as a playing facility for over 200,000 youth football players and an education center to fight against HIV/AIDS. designboom visited the building while in johannesburg. it is constructed near an existing community center with an addition designed by canadian design firm rufproject. the wood strip cladding adds sun protection to the interior, while also providing a striking design element. inside, there are change rooms with themes based on poplar football teams, meeting space, gym and first aid facilities. the intent of the project was to provide a lasting home for football in the working class neighbourhood that would continue on past the world cup.
