ninetree village in hangzhou, china

david chipperfield architects have announced the completion of their first two projects in china, the ninetree village and liangzhu culture museum in hangzhou.

ninetree village is located in hangzhou, located in southeastern china. it is in a small valley near the qiang tang river, surrounded by a dense bamboo forest. the buildings adapt to the beautiful topography of the land in which they sit, creating a continuous flow of space. each of the residential buildings are located in a small clearing, surrounded by the newly planted trees. there is a clubhouse with an outdoor pool situated on the northernmost point of the area in the narrowest part of the valley. it follows the irregular shape of the steep slope of the hill where it is located, creating somewhat of a retaining wall for the property. the residences are connected by an underground car park, making the site vehicle-free aboveground.
