NKBAK builds brick-clad building for stylepark next to 15th-century cemetery in frankfurt

german architectural practice NKBAK has completed a residential and office building adjacent to the 15th-century peterskirchhof cemetery in downtown frankfurt for architecture and design platform, stylepark. built into an existing inner courtyard of a building dating from the early 20th century, the project blends into its surroundings by continuing the historical, listed wall of the cemetery in its façade, using layers of bricks in different heights.

having to incorporate the listed cemetery wall of the peterskirchhof, which marks the boundary of the plot, into the planning, NKBAK decided to clad the new building in brick, as a visual continuation of the existing structure. the project’s ground floor houses the new offices of stylepark, and comprises three spacious open work areas, spots to which staff can withdraw, and a central ‘coffee point’ as a meeting place. two courtyards have been designed to bring natural light within the office spaces and allow for visual relationships between the individual workplaces, while they can also be used as lounge areas during summer months.NKBAK builds brick-clad building for stylepark next to 15th-century cemetery in frankfurt

the first and second floors of the building enclose a residential unit each: a two-room apartment with 44 sqm area; and a one-room apartment with 60 sqm area. despite limited living space, the apartments are characterized by a spacious feel thanks to the different height levels that organize living areas, and large window openings of varying sizes that visually link the interiors with the surrounding nature. besides the two ground-floor courtyards, the building includes generous roof terraces on the first and second floors.
